Coalition Hosts Second Annual Fundraiser to Benefit Historic Mt. Olive Cemetery
On February 7, 2024, the Madison County Racial Justice Coalition hosted its Second Annual Black History Month Fundraiser to support the maintenance and beautification the the Long Ridge Community’s Historic Mount Olive Cemetery.
We’re grateful to our community, faith groups and local businesses who generously supported the event in raising $4,000 (a 25% increase over 2023) for the project.

About the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Mars Hill
Founded in 1936, the Mount Olive Cemetery was purchased from the County School Board and is adjacent to the Historic Anderson-Rosenwald School. Among those buried there are the decedents of Mr. Joseph Anderson, who was one of the founders of Mars Hill University and Ms. Viola King Barnette, whose letter to the State School Board Superintendent was responsible for ensuring that all children across North Carolina could receive a public secondary education.
